A Long Weekend in Palm Springs

The Saguaro Palm Springs

Due to the glacial pace at which I’ve resumed blogging, there is distinct lack of schedule and, as such, whenever I sit down to write about the here and now, I can’t help but think about an adventure, outfit or similar that occurred while on hiatus.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to some cracking places so far in 2016, including Utah, New York (posts on Brooklyn here and Manhattan here), and LA, not to mention our week-long road trip through the great American West. But more on that in another post. Today, I want to talk all things Palm Springs.

Joshua trees at Jousha Tree Maybe it has something to do with the fact that San Francisco has been coated in a think layer of fog for the entirety of August, but the long weekend we spent in the ridiculously hot and sunny Palm Springs back in May has been on my mind of late. If you’re unfamiliar, Palm Springs is desert city in southern California, a couple of hours south east of LA. As a result, it was a popular haunt for the Hollywood elite in the 50s and 60s, and has retained much of that glamour and charm through mid-century modern architecture and a host of luxury resorts dotted with obligatory palm trees.

It’s the kind of destination where cocktails with breakfast are practically mandatory, and the main form of exercise is pootling around a pool on a giant inflatable flamingo watermelon. As a result, I was hesitant about going. Neither of us are great in intense heat and would take diving, hiking or exploring a new city over sitting by the pool any day, but we were looking for a relaxing getaway to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it’s only an hour away by plane…

Palm Springs cactiAs it happens, I bloomin’ loved the place! Granted, I spent a significant amount of time under a pool umbrella, but there’s something about that intensity of heat that makes time slow down. We spent five days reading, floating on novelty rubber rings and attempting to do as little as possible, enjoying lazy breakfasts at our hotel (the colourful Saguaro) and napping by the pool. We also managed to squeeze in a visit to Joshua Tree National Park and do a spot of hiking at the top of the city’s Aerial Tramway, both of which I highly recommend if you can tear yourself away from your sun lounger.

If we go back I might write up a mini travel guide but for now, here are a few photos from our trip. Oh, and if you are looking for a guide, check out this post by A Beautiful Mess – it’s one I referred to a lot when researching hotels.
