New Year’s Eve in Big Sur

The central Californian coastline is a place I’ve wanted to visit since we moved, so in December we finally got around to it, spending New Year’s Eve weekend in Big Sur. The objective was simple; eat, hike, read and relax.

Staying in Big Sur proper can be rather expensive and as it was the middle of winter, we didn’t much feel like camping, so we rented a cozy cottage in the nearby town of Cambria. ‘The Treehouse’ came complete with a fireplace (perfect for reading by), views over the nearby mountains and an extra bedroom, for our friends C & R, who joined us for part of the trip.

Like most vacations, I couldn’t bring just one camera with me, so in addition to my DSLR, along came a Fujifilm Instax Mini and my old Pentax K1000 – an SLR that I received for my 18th birthday. It’s a beautiful camera and although I love the richness of film photography, I’ve become much lazier in recent years, relying on my iPhone or semi-automated settings on my DSLR. In my defense, the Pentax had a broken light meter, which put me off using it for a while until I finally decided to get it fixed. Unfortunately it appears to still be on the fritz, so adjusting the settings took a little guess work, hence the grainer than normal photos.

Even though I’m blogging less at the moment, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a few photos on at the boardwalk of Moonstone Beach. It was quite cold during our trip so I layered my new Banana Republic jumper over an old chambray shirt – I think it’s fair to say that I didn’t hold back in indulging over ‘the holidays’ and it shows, just a little, in these photos.

We’re off to New York and Boston this week so for the last couple of weeks I’ve reverted back to my Whole30 ways and I feel so much better. I fully intend to eat *all the pizza* while we’re away, but it’s made me realise how much better my mind and body function when I’m eating less of certain foods, namely cheese.

Anywho, that’s enough waffling, here are some photos from our long weekend in Big Sur – the slightly grainer ones were shot on the Pentax using 400 speed Fujifilm.
